Poker Strategy – How to Beat the Fish and Become a Force at the Poker Table

The game of poker is a complex game of strategy, probability and psychology. While the short term element of luck that can bolster or tank even a great player’s results makes it more of a gambling game than a skill-based game, the most successful players use their knowledge of the game to make smart decisions. This allows them to beat the fish and become a force at their table.

A player may check (pass up the chance to bet for a while) before betting, or they can “open” their hand by raising their bet. When someone raises, you can call their bet if your hand is strong enough. Saying “raise” means you are adding more money to the pot than the previous bet and letting the other players decide whether to call your new bet or fold.

Observe your opponents’ actions to learn what kinds of hands they have and how they play their cards. Pay particular attention to how long it takes them to act – a quick action usually indicates that they have a good hand, while an immediate check or call suggests that their hand is weak.

If you can bet early in the hand, you will have more information about your opponent’s strength and be able to better assess your chances of winning the hand. However, if you are late in the betting, you will not have as much information and will be more likely to get called or raised by stronger players.
