What is a Casino?

A casino is a building or room in which gambling is conducted. The term may also refer to a place where gambling is legalized, or to an organization that runs a gambling establishment. Casinos offer a variety of gaming options and are found in many countries worldwide. Some casinos specialize in a particular type of game or in the conduct of games.

Gambling, in its various forms, has been a part of human life for millennia. Archaeologists have uncovered dice from 2300 BC, and playing cards appeared in the 1400s. In modern times, the casino has become a major center for entertainment and recreation. It offers excitement, glamour and a chance to win money. The casino industry is a major source of revenue for some nations and cities.

Something about gambling (probably the presence of large amounts of money) seems to encourage people to cheat and steal, in collusion or on their own; hence the extensive security measures found in most casinos. In addition to cameras, casinos rely on rules of conduct and behavior to maintain security.

There are thousands of casinos throughout the world, but some of the largest and most lavish are in Las Vegas, Macau and Atlantic City. The Venetian in Macau is the largest single-structure casino in Asia and includes a canal with bridges and gondolas, 350 shops, Michelin-starred restaurants, and more than 3,000 rooms. The Pechanga Resort Casino in California is another giant, with more than 5000 slot machines and an exclusive high-limit gaming area.
